How to Fix the Flaws: Dental Crowns or Veneers?

If you have broken, cracked, or chipped teeth, it can be hard to know the best way to restore them. Thankfully, cosmetic dentistry has several solutions. Dental crowns and veneers, for example, are both excellent options when it comes to fixing those flaws. Each of these can improve both the appearance of your smile as well as your oral health. How do you know, then, which choice is right for you? Keep reading to learn about each method to help you decide!

What are Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Veneers are thin shells made out of resilient porcelain that are bonded to the front side of your tooth. The durable ceramic they’re made of is coated with a strong glaze that makes them resistant to staining and breaking. They can be applied to already damaged teeth to protect them from any further harm. They can last 30+ years with the right care.

Dental crowns are caps made from a composite resin material that is placed over your tooth, molded to the desired shape, and then hardened with a curing light. This method isn’t restricted to just one side of your tooth and can be used both as a restorative treatment as well as a filling for cavities. They can also last decades but are not as strong as veneers and may need replacements eventually.

When are Veneers Best?

Veneers are generally considered a cosmetic solution and are meant to address minor aesthetic issues like discoloration, small gaps, and minor injuries. They’ll leave your teeth looking consistent and healthy but don’t necessarily fix the damage itself. If you mask a chipped tooth with a veneer, the chip remains but is hidden from view.

Although they’re intended to improve your appearance, veneers are incredibly tough and can help already damaged teeth avoid potential harm down the road.

When are Dental Crowns Preferred?

Dental crowns are considered a dental restoration rather than a cosmetic procedure. That means they can resolve major issues with your teeth rather than simply cover them up. If your pearly white has cavities, is badly cracked, or requires a root canal, your dentist must mend it so that your overall well-being doesn’t suffer. This is also the recommended way to repair teeth that are worn down by grinding.

If you’re still not sure which route to take, call your dentist! They will work with you to determine proper treatment plans that take your unique circumstances into consideration. Whichever one you choose, soon you’ll be showing off a perfect smile that will last for years to come!
