How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?

Porcelain veneers are an ultra-esthetic cosmetic dentistry procedure, designed to correct imperfections in the smile. These restorations are made of thin shells of porcelain that fit over the front portions of teeth appearing in the smile zone. As a highly experienced cosmetic and general dentist, Dr. Stampe and Dr. Gater use refined artistic skill to transform the smile with porcelain veneers in our Richardson, TX dental office. They prepare for porcelain veneer placement by gently removing a micro amount of enamel from the teeth. This lets custom dental veneers fit perfectly over your teeth to create a balanced, radiant smile. If cosmetic flaws or imperfections or you just want that Hollywood smile. Porcelain veneers give you the option for perfection!

Are Porcelain Veneers Right for You?

Porcelain veneers revitalize and reshape your smile by perfecting a wide range of cosmetic flaws. Because veneers bond directly to the front surfaces of your teeth, they are a permanent part of your smile transformation. The number of veneers you may need depends on your unique case. Veneers often are placed in pairs, or from canine-to-canine (the smile zone).

Porcelain veneers may correct the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Chipped, worn or uneven edges
  • Slightly misaligned teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Gummy smile appearance

Does Getting Veneers Hurt?

When you learn that the veneers process requires removing enamel, you may be worried that the procedure will be painful, but before we take that step, we numb the area with a local anesthetic. As a result, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. Keep in mind that when the anesthetic wears off, you’ll have temporary veneers on, which are not completely personalized. This means that you may have a little sensitivity while your custom veneers are being fabricated. In the interim, try to avoid direct contact with these teeth with triggers like cold soda or hot coffee.

How Long Does Getting Veneers Take?

Unlike in-office teeth whitening, which only requires one appointment to complete, getting veneers usually takes two. The first visit is when we prepare your teeth and take dental impressions for the lab. The second visit happens after the veneers are fabricated and ready to put on your teeth. Typically, the time between these appointments is two to three weeks while the lab technicians craft your custom smile. We can talk about the specific timeline you can expect when you come in for your consultation.

Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Before we move forward with veneers, we make sure your smile is ready for treatment. The good news is that the requirements are pretty simple and easy to achieve. You only need to have a healthy mouth free of infection and decay. If you have either of these issues, we’ll need to resolve the problem prior to veneers treatment. Otherwise, we can focus on transforming your smile and confidence.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Although the exact lifespan of your veneers will depend on several factors, they generally last between 10 and 20 years. They are extremely durable and stain resistant, but remember that they aren’t indestructible. If you take good care of your teeth through daily brushing and flossing, along with regular visits at City Line Dental Center, your veneers can keep looking their best. You also need to make sure you’re not misusing your veneers with unhealthy habits like chewing on pens, chewing ice, smoking, and more.
