The holidays are here and there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in some of your favorite sweet treats. That said, going overboard on sugary foods can result in cavities which would put a real damper on your festivities. If you’re hosting friends and family, offering healthier choices can prevent potential problems like tooth decay or gum disease. Keep reading for 4 ideas for tooth-friendly foods to pass around at your next gathering!

Idea #1: Egg Snowmen

Nothing says winter like white balls of snow piled high and donned with a hat, a scarf, and a carrot nose. For a delicious recreation, try using eggs instead. You can attach two hardboiled eggs with a toothpick and top them with thin slices of carrots for a hat. You can even include a small sliver for a nose and pieces of clove as eyes. The Vitamin D they contain will help absorb and carry much-needed calcium to your teeth and bones to keep them strong all season.

Idea #2: Caprese Pops

Who doesn’t appreciate food on a stick? Though they may not appease your sweet tooth like a cake pop, these appetizers are much better for your mouth. To build them, slice small grape or cherry tomatoes in half and remove the seeds. Fill them with a ball of fresh mozzarella and top it with a sprinkle of basil. These softer ingredients won’t injure your teeth and gums the way nuts and hard candies notoriously do. They’ll delight your senses without causing any dental drama.

Idea #3: Cheesy Reindeer

Cheese is rich in calcium and so is often provided in place of sugary treats at the snack table. Some soft cheeses come packaged in small triangles so you can unwrap and eat them as-is. Take a few and place pretzels on either side to look like antlers. Then, cut tiny pieces of black olives for eyes and a nose, and voila! You’ll have adorable reindeer just waiting to be devoured.

Idea #4: Pita Trees

Another fun idea involves slicing pita bread into triangles and inserting a pretzel stick into the bottom edge like a tree trunk underneath an evergreen. You can top it with a green spread like pesto or guacamole, then slice up colorful peppers or tomatoes to place on them as ornaments or garlands. When you’re finished, you’ll have a plate full of precious trees to pass around to family and friends.

Avoiding sugar and using softer, easier-to-chew foods can keep your smile safe and happy this holiday season. Instead of the usual candies and cookies, think outside the box for some truly festive creations!
