Learning about the benefits of clear aligner treatment can help you feel more confident when choosing this style of orthodontics, but you may be unaware of key takeaways that can make a difference in your decision. Before you sign up for a straighter smile, here are four things you should know before getting Invisalign.

Clear Aligners Mean a High Level of Responsibility

Traditional metal braces are bonded to the surfaces of your teeth, which means you cannot remove them when eating, drinking, or practicing your oral hygiene habits. With Invisalign, however, you’re required to remove your trays throughout the day to consume foods and beverages. You must also take them out to keep them clean. All of this means you must commit to the high level of responsibility that is required of clear aligners.

You Must Stay On Top of Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Brushing and flossing your teeth is essential if you want to avoid cavity-causing bacteria and gum disease. You’ll not only need to thoroughly clean and rinse your aligners (using appropriate products), but you’ll also need to eliminate any harmful particles that can adhere to your teeth and attempt to cause damage to your smile. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing are necessary components for longer-lasting oral health.

You Should Expect Some Minimal Discomfort

Although there is no wire tightening appointments, you can expect to experience some minimal discomfort when first receiving your aligners as well as when you swap out each set for a new one. The reason is that your teeth are shifting. When pressure is applied, as it is throughout your treatment, you should expect some feelings of pain. Fortunately, Invisalign uses gentle pressure, and it can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Retainers Are Necessary

Once you’re finished with Invisalign treatment, you shouldn’t expect to be “done.” Yes, the aligners are no longer necessary, but if you want your teeth to remain in their new location forever, you’ll be required to wear a retainer. Initially, your dentist will recommend that you wear it all the time. However, after several months, you’ll likely be able to move to where you only need to wear it at night while you sleep. You can, however, expect to wear a retainer for the remainder of your life if you want to keep your teeth from ever shifting out of place again.

Invisalign is a great way to treat crowded, crooked, gapped, and misaligned teeth. Keeping these components in mind before agreeing to treatment can help you feel more confident in your decision to choose clear aligners.

About the Author
Dr. Melody Stampe received her dental degree from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1996.
